Uphill skiing at a downhill area

Telluride, Crested Butte, Monarch and Powderhorn. These are downhill skiing areas, right? The names bring to mind the usual features of being lift-served, of letting skiers ride to the top, of having groomed runs, and of being professionally avalanche controlled. But wait! There’s more! At some Colorado lift-served ski areas, the phrase “uphill skiing” now can be added to those features. Uphill skiing necessarily involves climbing up a snowy slope against the pull of gravity, unassisted by any kind of a ski lift.
